The Not Quite So Angry Mule is an alcohol-free cocktail that will give you a kick where it counts, your throat.
I was first served this mocktail at The Quarters, a terrific restaurant in Huskisson, at Jervis Bay. My drink had lots of very finely diced red chilli floating around on top and it almost blew my head off, in a good way.
This was early in my alcohol-free days and I was truly thrilled to find a drink that had such power and flavour.
I scribbled down the description from the drinks menu and then tried my own version at home, using a bit less chilli.
The (Not Quite So) Angry Mule Mocktail
Ingredients
30ml fresh lime juice
1 tsp ginger puree
150ml ginger beer
1 tsp finely diced red chilli
Method
Stir together ginger puree and lime juice in a large glass then fill with ice and top up with the ginger beer.
Garnish with the chilli. Use more if you are a chilli fiend.
How To Make Ginger Puree
A note on the ginger puree you need to make this Angry Mule Mocktail. I am lazy and use a commercially available ginger puree from Gourmet Garden, available in most supermarkets. You can make your own ginger puree though.
1½ cups fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped
½ cup lemon juice
2 tbs sugar
Simmer ingredients gently for about 30 minutes, until the ginger is very tender. Then blend the cooked ginger with a stick blender or in a food processor. Strain through a sieve and then store in the fridge.
