This is one example where alcohol-free wine works as well as the alcoholic version, better really as it’s hangover-free. This warm, comforting drink is an aroma and flavour feast, with its citrus tang and whole spice richness.
I have found that mulling alcohol-free wine means that a bit less sugar is needed. I do love to add in a lot of citrus fruits. Try this recipe and then adjust its ingredients to suit your own preferences.
Spiced Mulled Red Wine
Ingredients
1 bottle alcohol-free red wine
2 cinnamon sticks
2 star anise
4 cloves
2 oranges, sliced
1 lemon, sliced
75g (⅓ cup) brown sugar
Method
Pour the wine and then all other ingredients into a large saucepan.
Warm up until simmering very gently, let simmer for 6-8 minutes.
Leave to cool a little in pan, you don’t want to burn yourself when pouring or drinking.
Serve in heatproof glasses or in mugs.
Sit by a cosy fire and enjoy.
Note: You can also cook this in a slow cooker. Just pop it all in and cook on low until simmering gently, about 1- 2 hours. Then you can keep it warm on low and serve as required.
Did you know that the Romans were the first to start mulling their wine? They would have needed something warm after they invaded Britain. The first recipe for a spicy mulled wine in English comes from 1390. So when you are drinking this mulled wine, you are carrying on a long and fine tradition.
